We all know your liver is the main work horse to metabolize alcohol and other toxins, but do you know how it works and how to support it?

When you drink, your liver breaks down your poison of choice in a two – phase process, conveniently called Phase I & Phase II.

What you need to know & how you can support Phase 1:

In Phase One, the liver creates and uses enzymes and oxygen to convert toxins to a water soluble “intermediary”.  This process is called oxidation, and makes the toxins more soluble in water. This makes the toxins easier to eliminate through the kidneys and other pathways.  Most environmental

With alcohol, phase one creates and uses an enzyme to break down alcohol to an intermediate substance called Acetaldehyde, which is more toxic than alcohol (but it is temporary) because it is an intermediary substance, i.e. a free radical.

I find it humorous that many health practitioners say: “it isn’t the alcohol that’s bad, it’s the Acetaldehydeâ€. Well, I say, “we wouldn’t have Acetaldehyde if we didn’t drink the alcohol to create itâ€. So where was I…

Supporting phase one is important but because it STARTS the detox systems it also creates this radical intermediary, Acetaldehyde, It is MOST IMPORTANT TO SUPPORT PHASE TWO TO BE SURE THIS IS FULLY ELIMINATED, NOT RECYCLED THROUGH THE BODY – THIS IS WHAT REALLY CONTRIBUTES TO YOUR HANGOVER.

To break this Acetaldehyde down we need an enzyme that the liver makes, which is created through this first cycle, so that it can go through Methylation which is hugely important to your whole being.

METHYLATION IS ACTUALLY PART OF PHASE TWO BUT I WILL COVER IT HERE BECAUSE IT IS SO IMPORTANT:

Some folks are just genetically ‘Bad Methylators’ where their Methylation process is compromised. I am half French Canadian and we are known to have this genetic weak link along with some Asians and American Indians, but any nationality can have this. It used to be thought 30% of the population has this issue but now it is 50%! You can be tested for this if you really want to know. I’ll go into more dtail in my next blog.

Alcohol reallllllly compromises the Methylation process, even in Healthy Methylators. This is where B vitamins, herbs and Amino Acids can help.The liver’s stores of the Methylation Factors needed run out after just a couple of drinks. This causes the Acetaldehyde to build up, causing damage.

Think of it like this: if you have only enough drinks that your liver can process, you’ll be fine. But after you have used up your little ‘Methylating Workers’ in the liver, and you keep drinking, your body cannot break down the toxins as fast as needed. You will have Acetaldehyde Overload. Hence ‘The Dreaded Hangover’.

But it’s not just about the hangover because this can cause long term damage. Methylation does lots of other amazing things besides just clear out your toxins of choice. Methylation actually happens in every cell in your body and even contributes to energy, blood sugar balance, mood/ brain health, inflammation, fat metabolism and alot more.

1.Take your B vitamins. Folic Acid, B 12 and other B vitamins are the basis of Methylation. But not just any B vitamins you need to take METHYLATED B VITAMINS. These are already broken down so that your liver doesn’t have to do it. How brilliant is that?

2. Take supplements to support the Glutathione pathway, which I’ll cover in the Glutathione Love Blog.
